Explaining Digital Marketing to 6-Year-Olds

“If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself.” - Albert Einstein

Using Einstein’s wisdom, I grabbed a few members of the Marcel team to see how we would explain Digital Marketing to a six-year-old. Using only the most common 1,000 words in the English language, here is what we came up with. You can even try it for yourself using the form below!

Search Engine Optimization

Patrick (Moz Oracle) says that SEO is:
“I build relationships between business and people. I find where both parties interests cross in different areas and form a game plan where both sides needs can be met.”

Kyle (Director of Strategy) says that SEO is:
"A way for a business to be easily found by people search for them simply by making good change that the big search people tell them to."

Web Development

Alex (Web Developer) says that Web Development is:
“Making a thing that you can see on a computer to give a person stuff or complete a want or need.”

Scotty (Web Developer) says that Web Development is:
“Wrong typing can kick you in the back. It can make you pull your hair out until you realize what you did wrong and figure it out.”

Paid Advertising

Michael (Director of Paid Media) says that PPC is:
“Pay to show up when someone is looking for what you offer. It allows you to make different offers to people to give them a better match for what they want.”

Morgan (Paid Media Manager) says that PPC is:
“Pay only when someone is looking for something you offer. If done right, it helps to grow and bring in new business.”

Conversion Rate Optimization

Jeff (UX Specialist) says that CRO is:
"Getting people to do exactly what you want them to do on a computer, like buying or signing up for something."

This post was inspired by XKCD’s “Up Goer Five” comic as well as the great work by Theo Sanderson and Mathias Kahl.
